ĊINE’AMBJENT #10 — Fashion Industry and Waste

April 24, 2019 @ 18:00 - 21:00 CEST

Free

The Friends of the Earth Malta Environmental Film Club is centred around thematic documentary and film screenings linked to current environmental justice issues. For the ĊINE’AMBJENT #10 session we will be looking at Fashion Waste and the Throwaway Culture.

Join us on Wednesday 24th of April at the Friends of the Earth Malta GRC in Floriana for a session curated by Fashion Revolution Malta. Doors open at 18:00 for drinks, the screening of True Cost (2015) will start at 18:30 sharp and will be followed by a panel discussion (scroll down for more info).
This event aims to spark a conversation around who made our clothes; opening up the supply chains behind the fashion industry that have long been kept invisible to see the impact they have on the environment and on others.

The fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries in the world after agriculture and oil, and the toll on raw materials is vast. It takes a few thousand litres of water just to produce a cotton t-shirt and over ten-thousand litres to produce a pair of jeans. The carbon footprint and chemical pollution is also extremely high. But… The fashion industry is a powerful and influential force, with a lot of potential for change. We want to explore how it can be better used for good!

True Cost (2015)

This is a story about clothing. It’s about the clothes we wear, the people who make them, and the impact the industry is having on our world. The price of clothing has been decreasing for decades, while the human and environmental costs have grown dramatically. The True Cost is a groundbreaking documentary film that pulls back the curtain on the untold story and asks us to consider, who really pays the price for our clothing?

Filmed in countries all over the world, from the brightest runways to the darkest slums, and featuring interviews with the world’s leading influencers including Stella McCartney, Livia Firth and Vandana Shiva, The True Cost is an unprecedented project that invites us on an eye opening journey around the world and into the lives of the many people and places behind our clothes.

Panel Discussion

The film screening will be followed with a panel discussion. Joining us on the day will be:
