Bee Cause Hub

AWARENESS RAISING & SUPPORT FOR POLLINATORS

Since 2015, FoE Malta has been working on the BeeCause campaign in order to increase awareness and knowledge on pollinators in the Maltese Islands. Agricultural production and agro-ecosystem diversity and biodiversity are threatened globally by the declining populations of pollinators. Limited to non-existent baseline data on local bee populations, economical valuation on the pollination services and general ecological and population studies constitutes a barrier to effective conservation and management of pollination services within the Maltese Islands. Furthermore, the local subspecies of bee (Apis mellifera ruttneri), is also threatened.

Friends of the Earth Malta provides hands-on training to the public, to increase local awareness on the linkages between biodiversity protection, pollination and agriculture. The long-term objective is to encourage the establishment of a pool of local bee-keepers to act as an integral component for biodiversity protection and local agriculture development. This project is linked with another FoE Malta initiative – to create urban gardens.

The Bee Base hub is intended to serve as a central meeting place for beekeepers and pollinator enthusiasts, to support them with honey harvesting equipment and provide a venue for knowledge sharing.
