Nurdle hunting on Comino at Santa Marija Bay

Every day, millions of tiny plastic pellets known as nurdles spill into the environment. These small, lentil-sized beads, typically about 2–5 millimetres in diameter and often round or oval in shape, are the raw material for most plastic products, from bottles to packaging, and they’re causing a quiet but serious environmental crisis. In Malta, as across the world, they wash up on our beaches, pollute the sea, and harm marine life.

Gathering local insights on food waste

In partnership with several organizations in Cyprus and Portugal, Friends of the Earth Malta is carrying out a project called Food Connect to help address the large amounts of food waste that occurs especially in the commercial sector here in Malta. Specifically, the project is helping to bring about an app through which food can be shared between donors, individuals, and organizational receivers such as soup kitchens and food banks.

Friends of the Earth Malta goes Plastic Free for the Month of July

July is associated with plastic use reduction, and for this reason Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM), goes plastic free for the month of July. On this note, FoEM encourages people to reduce plastic use. Started in July 2011 by an Australian organisation, Plastic Free Foundation, the month of July has been determined as global Plastic Free Month.

On Saturday 24 May, Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) organised a Community Assembly at Manoel Island as part of our “SOS Project – Save our Shores: Stop Wealthy Polluters”. This project highlights the issue of pollution and the appropriation of public coastal spaces by private interests and maritime industries that primarily serve the luxury sectors with significant environmental and social consequences.

Yelkouan shearwaters – Kemmuna’s best kept secret

The jagged cliffs of the island are home to the Yelkouan shearwaters (Puffinus Yelkouan, MT: Garnija). This species of seabird is a regional endemic, breeding only in the Mediterranean basin.  Almost 10% of the total population nests on the Maltese Islands, of which around 150-220 pairs are estimated on Kemmuna.
