Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is looking for a Communications & Campaigning Volunteer as part of our campaigns team.  This is a European Solidarity Corp (ERASMUS+/ESC) volunteering for up to 1 year (positions of 6-11 months available), ideally starting from March/April 2025 till February 2026, although this can be negotiable. You will be working in collaboration with the FoE Malta team and will be line managed by the Head of Campaigns and Director. Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed as part of the ESC programme.

Currently, the NGO campaigns focus on: Climate, Mobility & Energy; Food, Agriculture & Biodiversity; Zero Waste; Youth. FoEM’s educational and awareness-raising campaigns involve various target groups including youth, the farming community, police & decision-makers, marginalised communities (for example migrants, the elderly) and to a broad extent the general public.

Duties include:

You will be responsible for achieving the goals set for the duration of up to 1 year as part of our team, together with other staff members and volunteers. Due to the nature of our office environment, being dynamic and having a diverse set of skills is essential. Duties will include:

  • Support in the development of effective communication campaigns through social and traditional media for various campaign areas, including the Climate, Food, Agriculture & Biodiversity, Zero Waste, and Comino campaign.
  • Keeping online media up to date including updating the FoE Malta website and other social media (Twitter, FB, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube),
  • Assisting in writing press releases and statements and in generating coverage across traditional and new media for FoE Malta’s work,
  • Assisting FoE Malta’s policy campaigns (both national and EU),
  • Making and editing videos through creative means.
  • Organising media archives (media coverage and photos/videos),
  • Assisting in internal communication content
  • Talking to the public about FoE Malta’s work in environmental conservation and how it can be supported
  • Attending public and press events
  • Assisting in other communication work for online, print and broadcast media concerning ongoing projects and campaigns
  • Preparing and distributing info materials at stalls, fairs, events and in other public activities to inform the general public about environmental issues in Malta and encouraging them to contribute as volunteers or supporters.
  • Organising and coordinating a calendar of events and keeping an accurate record for statistical and evaluation purposes,
  • Designing FoEMalta’s printed and web-based materials including promotional leaflets, banners, logos and educational materials,
  • Editing photographs to be used in internal and external communication

Desirable Qualities & Skills:

  • Understanding of campaign development strategies.
  • Organisational skills when developing communication timelines and dissemination plans.
  • Increased fluency in communication in English and copy editing in various media forms.
  • An array of digital skills that can be further used for work opportunities such as:
  • Competencies in various media including video and podcasting to be able to communicate their voice, their visions.
  • Website design and editing
  • Social media communication skills
  • Graphic design and artistic expression and competencies using design and media software.
  • Public speaking and interpersonal communication skills
  • Statistical reporting on outreach and campaign effectiveness
  • Ability to carry out evaluation exercises.

Qualifications:
The candidate should have at least a degree level of education. Knowledge of EU affairs and experience with EU projects will be considered an asset.

 The ideal candidate should:

  • Aged 18-30 (ESC requirement)
  • A citizen of one of the partner or programme countries
  • Strong interest in environment and sustainability topics
  • Ability to work in collaborative decision-making processes and have excellent people and communication skills.
  • Affinity with the vision and values of Friends of the Earth Malta.

The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you:

  • Accommodation in a shared flat close to our offices in Floriana
  • Coverage of all living costs such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
  • Reimbursement of the flight and other transport to/from Malta, up to a certain limit
  • Monthly allowance
  • Private Henner insurance
  • In case of disabilities, funding is available for support (e.g. interpreters)
