Today, 6 October 2026, Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) and its Save Our Shores project brought the concerns of Malta’s coastal communities directly to Parliament, with a public action highlighting the growing pressures on the country’s coastline. The action transformed the public space outside Parliament into a symbolic, overcrowded Maltese beach, with beach towels, sun umbrellas, and even a pineapple stand criticising the craze at Blue Lagoon, as well as placards representing the increasingly limited and contested space available to the public.

Johann Buttigieg must be removed from all public office immediately
Moviment Graffitti and Friends of the Earth Malta are today taking direct action to deliver a clear message: Johann Buttigieg must be immediately removed as CEO of the Planning Authority and barred from holding any other public office. It is unacceptable that Buttigieg, against whom clear evidence of corruption and murky ties with powerful developers and business interests has emerged, remains at the helm of an authority so crucial to our country.

Save Our Shores Petition Highlights Growing Pressures on Malta’s Coastline
Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is thankful for the opportunity to provide feedback on the Grand Harbour Revival Plan, and are encouraged to see a number of important considerations already discussed in the plan, such as concerns around gentrification, the importance of climate resilient design, and the necessity of securing public access to the waterfront and proposed park. We believe the plan can do more to protect and bring back nature into this urban and industrial landscape, and can be an opportunity to provide safe, direct and attractive connectivity for walking, cycling and public transport through this key node in Malta’s transport network and urban area.

Malta’s seas are not a playground for oil giants
It may be a repeating election gimmick, but Friends of the Earth Malta denounces the Maltese government’s decision to once again open the door to fossil fuel exploration in our waters, by giving oil giant Chevron a licence for exploratory studies for oil and gas.

Streets for People, Not Just Cars: NGOs Urge Rethink of Msida Bridge Plans
Friends of the Earth Malta, Moviment Graffitti and Rota strongly condemn the recent proposal to build a pedestrian bridge as part of the Msida Creek project. The NGOs noted that similar proposals to build pedestrian bridges as part of the original plans for the project in 2020 had been shot down for a multitude of reasons.

FoEM’s Input on the Parks in Malta Consultation
We recently provided feedback on the three new national parks that are being designed: White Rocks (Pembroke), Manoel Island (Gżira) and Fort Campbell (Mellieħa). We are in favour of the initiative to expand the protected natural areas on our beautiful islands, however, we are calling for a more sustainable approach that puts people and nature first.

Kamp Kemmuna: What a Sustainable Getaway Looks Like
Between 14 and 15 March, Friends of the Earth Malta held its third Comino Environmental Education youth camp, Kamp Kemmuna: Edizzjoni Rebbiegħa. Following two successful camps in 2025, this marked the organisation’s first visit to Comino for the year and the third edition of the initiative, themed around spring in the hope of milder weather. Despite conditions that reminded everyone that winter had not yet fully passed, the camp was a great success, bringing together over 20 young participants at the historic bakery. The site is currently being managed and restored by Friends of the Earth Malta, with the long-term goal of transforming it into an environmental education hub on the Natura 2000 island.
