I am writing to ask you to invest in the people of Malta, to decongest the roads and provide our society with the possibility to use sustainable modes of transport, safely.

Ongoing government inaction has facilitated a hierarchy of transport, where the car is king, which congests our roads, contributes to carbon emissions and makes people feel as though they have no safe alternative.

With the global climate talks at COP27 just around the corner, where countries come together to work towards mitigating the full impacts of climate change, the time to act is now. Malta has also pledged to move towards a carbon neutral economy, but systemic overuse of cars will only move Malta away from this reality. With safer roads and investments in sustainable transport, we can join together to move towards a healthier, safer and environmentally friendly Malta. It is time we prioritise people over petrol, and empower citizens to make greener transport choices.

Currently, 76% of transport in Malta is made up of car drivers, 55.5% of energy consumption is from transport, and this is causing 33% of national greenhouse gas emissions. This is a stark reality. Our roads are constantly congested, and it is completely unsustainable. With an average of 30-40 new vehicles on the road every day, we cannot waste time NOT solving this problem. 50% of public space is currently taken up by roads and without safe infrastructure, maintenance, and enforcement, we have seen a surge in crashes and road safety concerns. 2022 has been the DEADLIEST year in the 21st century for fatalities on Maltese roads, 22 lives have been taken since January and no concrete action has been made to stop this trend continuing.

We make the following demands, to bring positive change:

> Better bus service and more regular and reliable bus routes
> Support for active modes of travel
> Safer roads, including investment in safe walking and cycling infrastructure

People should not be constantly stuck in traffic, breathing polluted air, and feeling unsafe on the roads. Please take action for your citizens today.
