Exhibition in Valletta and Sliema
Friends of the Earth Malta, is launching a photography exhibition by award winning photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi, telling the story of ten Maltese farmers, who have been chosen for their environmentally–friendly farming practices, and reveal some of the faces behind Maltese produce.
Farmers are vital to keeping the island’s rural landscape lush, green and well preserved. They also produce an abundance of diverse and healthy fruit and vegetables that are picked fresh throughout the seasons, providing us with nutritious food. Despite their essential work, farmers experience several challenges and are not always supported, especially by important policies that are shaping the food and farming landscape.
Anne Marie Apap, project coordinator at Friends of the Earth Malta said “As the EU’s smallest member state, Malta’s adoption of the revised Common Agriculture Policy and associated European Green Deal and Farm to Fork and Biodiversity strategies stands to impact the country’s farming community in a deep and profound way. In many ways, Malta may be viewed as a microcosm of the wider challenges facing the EU, with issues such as urban sprawl, sector support and an ageing farmer demographic liable to affect the country considerably.”
The exhibition will be on display at Valletta City Gate near Parliament from Friday the 6th until Sunday the 15th of May. It will then move to Sliema seafront at Ghar id– Dud from Thursday the 26th until Sunday the 29th of May.
Exhibition Tours will be held by Ms Maria Eileen Fsadni on Saturday 14th May at Valletta and Saturday 28th at Sliema, at 10:00 on both dates. Participation is by registration through our events page.
A photography booklet will be published to accompany the exhibition to showcase the full interviews with the farmers and the photographs by Darrin Zammit Lupi. These can be purchased after the 17th of May from our online Eco-Shop, though it is advised that this is a one–time print only with limited copies available .
We invite you to learn about Malta’s farmers and embark on an exploration of their genuine passion for agriculture, which, in the face of several struggles, serves as the fuel that keeps them going. Visit our website for more information www.foemalta.org
