Community Assembly – Save our Shores – Manoel Island

Community Assembly – Save our Shores – Manoel Island
When: Saturday 24 May, 10:00 – 12:00
Where: the steps of Fort Manoel on Manoel Island: https://maps.app.goo.gl/1QJpikwxqj9otTUs8
In our SOS project – Save Our Shores: Stop Wealthy Polluters – we address the negative environmental and social impacts of wealthy polluters. The encroachment of marinas, yachting infrastructure and cruise liner berths on public spaces severely limits local communities’ access to coastal areas. Such industries negatively impact people’s health, because of the air and noise pollution they cause. Yet, Malta’s policies on development and maritime industries have long prioritised the interests of wealthy tourists and yacht owners over local communities.
In a series of Community Assemblies, we work directly with local communities to discuss the negative environmental and social impacts of privatisation of public space along our shores, and private over public interests, and together will co-create political demands to campaign for more ambitious regulations to protect public space and local communities’ health.
Our first Community Assembly will be held on Manoel Island – collaborating with the coalition behind the Manoel Island – Post Għalina campaign, to discuss these issues in the context of Manoel Island. We will also be collecting signatures during this last weekend of the petition, to demand the return of Manoel Island to the public as a green, natural space to enjoy.
Why: join us for the Community Assembly on Manoel Island, on the steps of Fort Manoel:
– Learn more about the SOS project: Save Our Shores – Stop Wealthy Polluters
– Participate in a group discussion to co-create demands on how to protect public spaces for private takeover and protect people’s health from polluting and encroaching industries benefiting the wealthy instead of the local community, such as marinas, luxury developments and cruiseliner infrastructure.
– Join us for a swim and enjoy a free ftira provided by us
– Contribute to collecting signatures for the last weekend of the Manoel Island – Post Għalina petition
