Moving Forward: Friends of the Earth Malta Youth Environmental Camp

On the weekend of March 21st-23rd, young environmental advocates gathered at the scenic Xrobb L-Għagin Hostel in M’xlokk for a transformative and empowering weekend. Hosted by Friends of the Earth Malta (FOEM), the Youth Environmental Camp brought together like-minded individuals passionate about making a positive impact on the environment and their communities. The camp was a perfect blend of engaging workshops, team-building activities, and reflection sessions, all designed to foster a deeper connection to nature, social justice, and community organizing.

Immersive Learning and Empowering Activities

The camp’s activities were thoughtfully curated to encourage personal growth, collaboration, and hands-on learning. Each session allowed participants to explore various facets of activism, from the power of communication to understanding the importance of self-care in the journey of creating change. Here’s a closer look at the key activities that made this camp an unforgettable experience:

1. Wildlife Hospital Tour

Participants were able to attend the Malta Animal Rehabilitation Centre, offering everyone a unique glimpse into the care and rehabilitation of injured and endangered animals. From Sea Turtles to Hedgehogs, it was a reminder of the delicate balance of nature and the critical work being done to protect Malta’s wildlife. This experience helped participants recognize the vital role that wildlife conservation plays in preserving the planet’s biodiversity.

2. Lunch with Activists

Over a wonderful soup lunch, participants had the chance to engage with a local activist who has been working for a local organization for environmental and social causes. This informal yet enriching discussion allowed participants to learn about the real-world challenges and victories in activism, gaining valuable insights into what it takes to create lasting change. The lunch created an atmosphere where experiences were exchanged, and inspiration flowed freely.

3. Privilege Walk (Interactive and Team Workshop)

The Privilege Walk activity was both thought-provoking and eye-opening. Through an interactive and reflective exercise, participants were invited to step into the shoes of others, exploring the complex dynamics of privilege and social inequality.

4. Theatre of the Oppressed (Interactive and Team Workshop)

Thanks to a local Theatre activist, a highlight of the camp was the Theatre of the Oppressed workshop, an engaging activity designed to encourage participants to think critically and creatively about power, oppression, and social change. Through role-playing and drama, participants confronted societal issues and explored possible solutions, deepening their understanding of activism and the need for creative strategies in day-to-day interactions. This workshop truly emphasized the power of art and expression in social movements.

5. Social Media and Communications (The World of Media with FOEM Comms Team)

In today’s digital age, the power of social media cannot be underestimated. The workshop on social media and communications, led by the FOEM Comms Team (Aretina Stefani and Owen Dyer), equipped participants with the tools to effectively use online platforms to amplify their voices and drive change. From crafting compelling messages to understanding the intricacies of digital advocacy, participants walked away with practical skills that will help them spread the environmental movement’s message to a wider audience.

6. Self-Care Workshops and Exercise Routines

Activism can be mentally and physically demanding, which is why the camp also focused on the importance of self-care. Participants took part in self-care workshops and exercise routines designed to promote mental well-being, physical health, and personal reflection. These sessions were a reminder that in order to care for the world, we must first care for ourselves. Participants left with a renewed sense of balance and strategies to maintain their well-being amidst the challenges of activism.

7. Community Organizing (How to Engage with the Community)

Facilitated by FOEM’s Damjan Attard (Food, Agriculture, and Biodiversity Campaign Manager), The final workshop focused on community organizing, offering valuable insights into how to effectively engage with local communities and inspire collective action. Participants learned practical strategies for mobilizing people, building grassroots movements, and creating lasting community impact. This session was particularly empowering, as it provided attendees with the tools they needed to bring change to their own neighborhoods.

A Success in Reflection and Connection

Throughout the weekend, the camp served as a much-needed break from the daily hustle, giving participants the space to reflect, disconnect, and engage in deep conversations. It allowed them to step away from their usual routines and explore new perspectives, fostering a sense of connection not only with the environment but also with each other.

The Youth Environmental Camp was a success in inspiring young individuals to think differently about how they engage with the world around them. It equipped them with the skills, knowledge, and inspiration to be more active and engaged in the mission of Young Friends of the Earth Malta. As the camp came to an end, participants left with a renewed sense of purpose, ready to take action and continue their work for a more just and sustainable world.

Looking Ahead

The Youth Environmental Camp was more than just a gathering—it was a testament to the power of youth-driven action and the importance of collaboration, reflection, and self-care in creating meaningful change. As the mission of Young Friends of the Earth Malta continues to grow, the energy and enthusiasm of these young leaders will undoubtedly play a crucial role in shaping the future of environmental activism in Malta and beyond.
