Students Explore Biodiversity and Sustainability During Pembroke School Environmental Outing

On Tuesday, 8th April 2025, Year 7 students from ethics and religious studies classes at Pembroke Secondary School joined Friends of the Earth Malta for a fun and educational environmental outing.

Set in the beautiful Pembroke Garigue Heritage Park, part of which is a protected Natura 2000 site, the outing invited students to step outside the classroom and engage with nature directly.

Throughout the day, students rotated between four interactive stations, each addressing a key sustainability theme:

  • Renewable Energy – understanding the basics of solar, wind and other sustainable energy sources.

  • Waste Reduction & Recycling – learning practical tips to reduce personal waste and improve recycling habits.

  • Humane Treatment of Animals – reflecting on animal rights and our shared responsibility towards living beings.

  • Local Flora and Biodiversity – exploring the unique plants and wildlife of the Maltese Islands, and how to protect them.

The outing encouraged young people to think critically about their personal responsibility towards the environment, and to reflect on concrete actions they can take to protect nature in their daily lives.

This initiative was part of Friends of the Earth Malta’s ongoing work in environmental education, aiming to empower the next generation to be active, informed and responsible environmental stewards
