Looking back at our Urban Cycling Skills Training & Group Ride

To celebrate EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK 2024, Friends of the Earth Malta organised an Urban Cycling Skills training and group ride, in collaboration with Critical Mass Malta! This training and ride empowered people who know how to cycle, but need some support to feel confident to ride on Malta’s busy roads and learn about the do’s and don’ts of urban commuting.

In our Urban Cycling Skills training, experienced commuter cyclists Mike Rosner and Dr Suzanne Maas shared information about the traffic rules for bicycle and micromobility users in Malta, including tips on how to position yourself on the road, how to tackle busy roundabouts, and how to ensure you are visible while riding in traffic. After the training session, the group went out for a ride with our friends of Critical Mass Malta (who organise group rides on every last Friday of the month!), to experience the power of ‘safety in numbers’ and build confidence on the road. As a group of 16 cyclists we cycled in Floriana, over the Blata l-Bajda bridge, through Hamrun and Santa Venera, then down through Birkirkara and Msida, cycling the Gzira front and looping back via Ta’Xbiex and Msida to our starting point in Floriana. The training was a success and participants learned new skills and boosted their confidence! This training will be organised again in autumn, interested people can send us a message to be kept informed.

This training was organised as part of our MICROMOBI project, in which we promote micromobility as a cool, fast and green alternative to the car dependent transport system we are stuck in. Read more about the project activities here. Keep an eye on our social media (fb/ig) or sign up for our newsletter to be kept informed about upcoming cycling training and other mobility activities.

If you’re inspired to join the next monthly Critical Mass ride in Malta, you can find out the details here.
