On the 12th and 13th of July, the historic Old Bakery of Comino came to life as over 25 young participants gathered for the first ever Kamp Kemmuna organised by Friends of the Earth Malta. This was a two-day off-grid experience that blended nature, activism, and collective dreaming.
The camp, organised as part of the Embrace the World Erasmus+ project and supported by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ, created space for youth to reconnect with nature, learn hands-on environmental skills, and reflect on their role in shaping the future of protected spaces like Comino.
From the moment we arrived, the camp was alive with energy and curiosity. We snorkelled with Sharklab Malta, discovering marine biodiversity while collecting litter. BirdLife Malta led us on a sunset walk exploring Comino’s unique ecology. We shared plant-based meals, baked pizza, gazed at stars without city lights, and began our Sunday with yoga and guided meditation by the sea.
One of the highlights was the Youth Policy Academy, a workshop inviting participants to imagine what a more sustainable and youth-led future for Comino could look like. Reflecting on overtourism, neglect, and environmental degradation, we brainstormed ideas for protecting both the heritage and biodiversity of the island.
Kamp Kemmuna wasn’t just a camp, it was a moment of pause, to observe and imagine the future of Comino. A chance for young people to reconnect with the land, with one another, and with hope.
We left Comino with sandy feet, full notebooks, new friendships, and a renewed sense of purpose. Thank you to all who made this experience possible. We can’t wait to do it again.
