Vera, a dedicated environmental advocate here in Malta, recently attended the Climate Care Camp in Denmark and has come away with a wealth of insights and inspiration. As an active member of an environmental NGO, Vera is passionate about driving positive change, and the experience at the camp has only strengthened her resolve. Here, she shares her thoughts on what it meant to be part of this unique gathering of like-minded individuals.
“I’m a very anxious person myself, and in my work, I see how much people worry about the environment as well. I thought going to Denmark would be a great opportunity to refresh my mind, meet new people, and maybe pick up some practices for my everyday life and work. And I was so happy to be chosen because I got everything I hoped for and even more!
But let me tell you what happened there from the beginning…
Day 1
I had quite a long journey from Malta through Milan, with a short sleep in Copenhagen, and then after an hour by train, I arrived at the village where the venue was. I needed to walk 30-40 minutes… Already on the train, I couldn’t believe how green and endless the landscape was! Not something I see in Malta every day! When I arrived at the small railway station, I finally lost the last bits of sleepiness and fatigue. It was so beautiful around! Fresh air, birds, green fields, and minimalistic houses. I met three people on my way to the venue. I was impressed.
The location was impressive as well—a very old, huge building. As we found out later, it was an abandoned ceramic factory turned into a social space. It was literally a maze with so many treasures inside, including many new people. Social anxiety hit me, but literally 10 minutes after the first small talk, it decreased, and by the end of the day, it was gone. The people were so like-minded, relaxed, and friendly!
The first day of the Climate Care Camp was all about arriving and settling in. We got to know each other not only through chats but also quite closely through activities with invited experts. We had an intimate practice where we needed to relax among who were basically strangers. But it was a good step and helped set the right mood for the camp. Then we cooked very tasty strawberry jam on the bonfire and connected to our senses. By the way, digital detox throughout the camp was very helpful! In the evening, we had a nice workshop about the plants around us that could help decrease anxiety or be beneficial in other ways.
Day 2
The second day was rainy and quite philosophical. We discussed dualism, meditated, and did some yoga, which was very nice to move! We had our own safe seat spot where we could meditate and feel secure and free. We also created postcards where we later wrote down our intentions and planted them here in Malta. We finished up the day with a meaningful movie.
Day 3
Day three was an emotional and introspective day. I think it was the longest and hardest for me. I was crying and releasing my emotions a lot during the whole camp, but this day was particularly tearful. The circle where we shared our pains… We are all so similar and all worry about the same things, despite nationality, country of residence, race, status, etc. We all have fears, and there was a safe space to share them. And most importantly, to receive support afterward. You can’t imagine how helpful a simple, warm hug and “I am sorry” can be.
After that experience, I needed to ground myself badly, so the next activity couldn’t have been better! We went to a farm! A real community farm where vegetables and herbs are grown with special love and eco-friendly techniques. Working with soil under the wind and sun is so therapeutic! This day was a crucial step in the healing process, allowing everyone to confront their feelings and find strength in their shared experiences. At the end, we had a real Midsummer with a huge bonfire, rituals, and songs.
Day 4
The fourth day was all about renewal and self-care. We also danced for our plants! That was such a unique, peaceful, and freeing experience! On the last day, we committed to moving forward with a new mindset. It was the perfect time for it since the training was quite intense despite being relaxing at the same time. Also, the food was amazing! It completely changed my perception of vegan food. It is so tasty!
I can’t express all my gratitude in words for this opportunity given by FOE and NOAH! This training wasn’t just about anxiety about the climate, it was much more! It was about connecting with yourself, nature, and the people around you. I gained many insights about the world and about myself.
