Open Call for Contributions: Research Materials on Comino and its historic buildings

For the past couple of years, Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) has been working on ‘Il-Forn ta’ Kemmuna’. This initiative aims to restore the historic bakery, situated close to the Santa Maria Bay and that once sustained the community of Comino, and transform it into an environmental education centre.

Comino has been given the highest protection status of a Natura2000 site, yet despite this, the island has been in a dire state of negligence and deterioration, while the beaches are occupied and overexploited by businesses. This centre will honour the island’s status as a Natura2000 site, while taking into consideration the cultural and historical significance of the island and bakery holistically.

To achieve this vision, we are conducting a thorough study of Comino’s historical and cultural significance. As part of this effort, we are opening a call for contributions to gather materials that shed light on the island’s history, culture, and the role of its historic bakery.

What We’re Looking For:

We invite contributions of any material related to Comino, including but not limited to:

  • Historical photographs
  • Oral histories, stories, or records tied to Comino
  • Archival documents, manuscripts, or publications on the island’s community life
  • Research articles, essays, or studies about Comino’s history, culture, or ecology
  • Any other materials that could support the project’s research objectives

We are also accepting donations of books related to Comino’s flora, fauna and history.
