Friends of the Earth Malta turns 40!
This year marks a remarkable milestone for Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) as we celebrate our 40th anniversary! We have been active in the Maltese environmental field since our foundation in 1985, under our initial name Żgħażagħ Għall-Ambjent (Youths for the Environment), evolving into Moviment Għall-Ambjent (Movement for the Environment) and in 1991 becoming Friends of the Earth Malta.
Throughout the years, our work has helped shaped Malta’s environmental sector drawing awareness to the ever growing need for change. Our organisation gained popularity in November 1985, after the media covered of a group of activists who were attacked during a peaceful protest which opposed development on Malta’s beaches and countryside. From there, the organisation continued to grow and evolve, while leaving a last positive impact on the story of our archipelago.
As we reflect on four decades of dedication, activism, and achievements, we want to share the stories of our past members who helped shape the legacy of FoEM. For this reason, we’re launching a special open call to celebrate and document our collective journey. We invite you to share your experiences, stories, and insights with us as past members.

- Share Your Stories
Tell us about your time with Friends of the Earth Malta; your achievements, challenges, and lessons learned. Contribute to our archives, throughout this year we will be inviting people to share their visual, audio and written records related to FoEM which will be conserved in our newly established archives.
- Be a Part of the Human Library
We are hosting two unique Human Library events – one for youth and another for a more general audience. As a “human book,” you’ll have the chance to share your experiences first hand with participants, sparking meaningful conversations about environmental activism, past milestones, and future possibilities.
