During last year’s Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE) Annual General Meeting (AGM), it was decided to hold the 2024 AGM in Malta. Excitement filled the air as it was announced that we will host the next meeting. For the past year, we’ve been busily preparing the various facets of the meeting behind the scenes and drafting a green travel plan for participants to minimise the environmental impact of attendees’ journeys to the island. The decision to host the AGM in Malta reflects a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that environmental activism transcends geographical boundaries.
Each year, the AGM brings together a vibrant community of environmental activists from across the continent. With representatives from over 30 different Friends of the Earth Groups in attendance, the AGM serves as a platform for reflection, strategising, and celebrating wins.
Reflecting on the Past, Planning for the Future
At the heart of the AGM we discuss strategy, where member groups reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year while charting a course for the future. With environmental issues becoming increasingly urgent, these conversations are crucial for aligning efforts and maximising impact.
What is Friends of the Earth Europe?
Friends of the Earth Europe is the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting more than 30 national organisations with thousands of local groups.
Based in Brussels, the organisation coordinates the network’s joint campaigns, and pushes for action by the EU to protect people and the planet.
They are the European arm of Friends of the Earth International, a global federation uniting over 70 national member organisations, some 5,000 local activist groups, and over two million supporters around the world.
A Brief History of Friends of the Earth Malta
Against the backdrop of the AGM, it’s worth highlighting the history of Friends of the Earth Malta. Originally founded as Żgħażagħ Għall-Ambjent (Youths for the Environment) in 1985, the organization has been a driving force in environmental advocacy on the island. Over the years, it has evolved into Moviment Għall-Ambjent (Movement for the Environment) and has played a crucial role in raising awareness and mobilising communities.
In 1991, Friends of the Earth Malta joined the international network of Friends of the Earth, becoming part of a global movement dedicated to environmental protection and sustainability. This connection has enabled the organization to collaborate with like-minded groups around the world, amplifying its impact and influence.
