Ċine’Ambjent: Environmental Film Festival 2023 at the Valletta Design Cluster

Our beloved Environmental Film Festival, is making a come back in February 2023! Ċine’Ambjent is a non-profit film festival providing local communities with a wide range of new and thought-provoking environmental films over a 2-day program. Climate change is causing 20 million people to be forced out of their home or country every year, so this time around the films chosen will delve into the theme of climate-induced migration

Saturday 4th February 2023

3:30pm Doors Open
4:00pm – 6:00pm Screening of Thank You for the Rain (Kenya) (2017) + Discussion with Dr Stefano Mocada
Thank you for the Rain covers five years of the life of Kisilu Musya, the Kenyan farmer who has made his way from a father to a climate activist on the global stage. It started with Kisilu filming his daily life in Kenya, his family and damage to nature. The film has profoundly impacted its audience in more than 60 countries, winning 16 awards and competing at 28 international festivals.

6:30pm – 9:00pm Screening of Uma: A Water Crisis in Bolivia (Bolivia) (2021)
This film combines the confrontation between the Andean indigenous communities and the government, women’s stories of displacement and resistance, and the struggle for the right to clear water. The stunning views of the tropical Andean glaciers, the vanished Lake Poopo, and the mines of Oruro accompany the plot.

9:00pm till late After-film party at Maori with world music by Nil Nisi Bonum and food by the Migrant Women’s Association

Sunday 5th February 2023 Screening of Anote’s Ark (Kiribati) (2018) + Discussion with Dr John Paul Cauchi
Kiribati is an island country in Oceania with 100,000 people. The Kiribati nation has become the first nation under the threat of entirely disappearing because of sustained sea level rise caused by climate change. The Canadian documentary by Matthieu Rytz tells the story of people who strive to save the lives of their families and the country on different levels.

4:00pm – 6:00pm Screening of Delikado (Philippines) (2022)
Three environmental activists of Philippino island Palawan clash with the government and business structures in the struggle to preserve Palawan, the “last ecological frontier”. From time to time the activists have to risk their lives in confronting the crimes and drug wars in order to save Palawan natural resources and its untouched beauty.

Since we want the films to be accessible to all we have a 3 tiered system for the ticket prices. The tickets are a deposit which can be returned at the end of the event or left as a donation to our NGO. Your support is appreciated so please choose the ticket that truly represents your situation. 🌞
