Peaches were among the first tree fruits to be domesticated as early human societies embraced horticulture, but did you know that they originally came from China ? Although you might see many Maltese fields full of peaches at this time of the year, they are actually a naturalised alien species that was introduced in Malta after year around the 15oos.
Peaches fresh from the tree or in treats like pie, jam and ice cream have been enjoyed by people for a long, long time. But, until now, it was not clear just how long it has been. Recent studies show that from analysis made on well-preserved ancient peach pits, domestication of this sweet fruit back at least 7,500 years to China’s lower Yangtze River Valley in the vicinity of Shanghai.

PEACH AND GOAT CHEESE BRUSCHETTA RECIPE
Ingredients
- 8 slices bread, toasted
- 3 ounces goat cheese
- 8 slices fresh peach
- small bunch of fresh basil leaves
- 1-2 tablespoons good olive oil
- pinches of salt and pepper
Method
- Spread goat cheese on toast.
- Top each with a slice of fresh peach, basil leaves, and a light drizzling of olive oil.
- Salt and pepper to taste.
