Friends of the Earth Malta has organized a photography exhibition with portraits and stories of farmers. The importance of their profession can not be stressed enough as they manage, nurture, plant, cultivate and oversee our food supply. We want to actively bring light to the life of being a farmer in Malta and how the European Agricultural Policy (CAP) affects them. Short stories about each farmer will be illustrated with pictures taken by well-known photographer Darrin Zammit Lupi.
Friday 6th to Sunday 15th May on Republic Street, Valletta Thursday 26th to Sunday 29th May on Ghar id-Dud, Sliema

RECAP: Be Active Bee-come a Beekeeper
As part of our Be Active events, Friends of the Earth Malta had their Bee-come a beekeeper session. We learned more about bees, the worker, the queen, the comb, their delicious honey and what they do for our planet. Bees are increasingly under threat from human activities while they are vital for our survival, providing us with important ecosystem services. Beekeeper Jorge taught the participants the importance of this little creature and educated us on how to keep and nurture them. We are happy to have seen so much interest in bees by our participants and that the event was a great success, inspiring us all to show more love to bees. Also want to support bees? Buy our bee hotel! Project funded by Aġenzija Żgħażagħ through the Be Active Scheme

Antimicrobials in a microbial world
Although we can not see them, micro-organisms play an unnoticed important role in many areas of our lives. Without micro-beings, life would be impossible. Due to improper use or overuse of antimicrobials, we are now facing the downside of these pesticides. How can the Common Agricultural Policy help shape the EU’s path toward sustainable food systems? Flower of the month: Stinking Iris
Locally very rare, this elegant native iris with a not so pretty name is locally restricted to shaded, woodland areas. Its malodorous reputation, emphasised in both its Latin and common names, is not well-earned as it cannot really be perceived that strongly. It is said that the foul smell results from its leaves being crushed. The dagger-like foliage also gives it the older name of Gladdon in English. Read more about this plant and its' related project here!

In April, two of our volunteers had the opportunity to attend a communications training held in a small Catalonian town in the mountains. Organized by Ulex, in collaboration with the Public Interest Research Centre (PIRC), the training was designed as an experiential taster to try out the 5 essential steps to building an effective communications strategy which harnesses narrative power. Want to read more about these trainings and how to become a volunteer? Click on the link below!
