We live on a planet facing an emergency with nature disappearing at an unprecedented rate. Together with over a 100 organisations from around the EU, we are launching this initiative to show that the public supports decision-makers to take much bolder steps to transform our agriculture, save nature and support sustainable farmers that protect our countryside and provide us with fresh food daily.

Valletta Contemporary will be presenting a panel discussion about art as a form of activism. For this event, they invited four known names on the local art scene, whose practice directly relates to activism; political cartoonist and artist Seb Tanti Burlò, lecturer and writer Immanuel Mifsud, artist, curator and cultural manager Margerita Pulè and Raffaella Zammit from Gabriel Caruana Foundation. The panel discussion is being held in collaboration with Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) and will be moderated by Maria Eileen Fsadni, who is a FoEM volunteer and an art historian herself.

Learning about grafting on almond trees
|
|
Friends of the Earth Malta is currently organising a series of events called “Mill-bdiewa għall-bdiewa“ (From farmers, for farmers): informal workshops in which young farmers and others interested in agriculture and gardening share their knowledge. The latest session in the series focused on how to graft different fruit species on almond trees. On a sunny Sunday morning we gathered at the fields of Charlot Attard on the outskirts of Siġġiewi with a group of over 20 enthusiastic participants to learn more about the art and science of grafting.

'If we give up, we have lost the battle'
Till a few years ago, Adrian Gatt knew almost nothing about trees, but now his Facebook group The ‘Grow 10 Trees’ Project has the backing of over 5,000 people. Built on the simple principle that anyone with a balcony can grow a few trees, Adrian aims to populate Malta’s public areas with trees. I meet Adrian at the back of his Sliema-apartment. It is here where he has turned his family garden into a small nursery.
