The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), is a behemoth of rules and regulations. It is one of Europe's largest (and oldest) policies, taking up to 41% of the EU’s budget in 2016. This may sound distant and technical, but it is the policy that not only determines what is on European citizens’ plates but is also one of the major drivers of change on European landscapes, rural life, nature and biodiversity. Over the past 50 years, it has evolved to meet various challenges. With the Commission’s proposals for the future of the policy released on 1st June, the policy now lies at a crossroads.

The EU’s top court ruled that a controversial new generation of food genetic engineering techniques should be subject to EU safety checks and consumer labelling. Friends of the Earth Malta believes that these new ‘GMO 2.0’ genetic engineering techniques must be fully tested before they are let out in the countryside and into our food. We welcome this landmark ruling which defeats the biotech industry’s latest attempt to push unwanted genetically-modified products onto our fields and plates.

Let's Nature – Ċittadella
This is an invitation to reflect on future cities, by taking a detailed look at our past and understanding our roots. We want to reflect on the theme of urbanisation and the environment - the notion of cities built for people, to bring the human dimension back into our cities and towns. Annalise Falzon will be taking us onto a detailed tour of Cittadella, starting from the visitors' centre at 17:30 all the way through a Nature Walk to appreciate the flora and fauna still present at Cittadella. We will be able to watch sunset and dusk over the bastions as well as manage a short observation of bats until 20:00hrs. Local creative and puppeteer Sean Briffa will also be joining the event with a street puppet show exploring the theme of urbanisation and the use of spaces in our cities for creative and cultural entertainment.

Edward Said – People have their calling, this is mine
It is no secret that Malta has, for some time, been going through what seems like a never-ending campaign to build-up every square-inch of the island; all in the name of progress and the ‘betterment’ of our country. Edward Said is a Maltese architect who has made it his life mission to safeguard Malta’s cultural and natural heritage. His proactive approach and steadfast determination injects a sense of hope into a situation which may seem dire from the outside.

What's in season - August
Every month we feature a fruit or vegetable that is in season, along with a fun fact or recipe idea. The bambinella is a Maltese cultivar of the Pyrus communis. This bite-size pear, with its reddish hue, is a delightful addition to the selection of fruit harvested locally in the months of July and August.
