Friends of the Earth Malta has joined over 40 organisations in the “Manoel Island: A Place for Us” campaign, calling for Manoel Island to be transformed into a car-free public park, fully accessible to the public and protected from further over-construction. With the MIDI concession currently under renegotiation, there is a real chance to reimagine Manoel Island as a green, cultural, and recreational haven in the heart of the harbour. This is a unique opportunity to restore natural spaces for public benefit in one of Malta’s most urbanised regions.

In January, Aretina and Martina travelled to Vienna for the a development hub about climate emotions. The four-day learning experience wasn’t just about planning and presentations – it was a full-on collaboration with project partners to bridge knowledge gaps and begin developing a climate emotions toolbox and training materials. The goal of the toolbox is to create tools that help young people process feelings related to climate change and inspire them to take action.

What if walking, cycling, or scooting wasn’t just a way to get around – but a way to create cleaner, safer, more human-friendly streets ? As part of the MICROMOBI project, we developed resources to build skills and raise awareness around micromobility — small human- or electric-powered mobility devices suitable for short urban trips. Increasing the use of micromobility is a key step to reducing transport-related carbon emissions and reclaiming public space in our cities.

Light pollution refers to the artificial levels of light created by human activities which impact the night sky, the surroundings, as well as human health and wildlife. The obsession with overlighting or misdirected ligthing is not only a great waste of energy (which often translates into an increase of air pollution) but it is often totally unneccesary. This is often the case with excessively bright lights, floodlighting resulting in lighting up the night sky and creating a far reaching glow and glare.

Each year, World Bee Day offers an opportunity to raise awareness about the crucial role that bees and other pollinators play in maintaining the health of both people and the planet, as well as the numerous challenges they currently face. Since 2018, this day has been celebrated thanks to the efforts of the Government of Slovenia and the support of Apimondia, the International Federation of Beekeepers’ Associations. Their initiative led the UN General Assembly to designate May 20th as World Bee Day.

Young people today are faced with an overwhelming array of environmental and social challenges, including climate change, biodiversity loss, and rising inequality. In Malta, young people are particularly affected by the lack of green public spaces, environmental degradation, and a political system that often overlooks the voices of younger generations. Despite their concerns, many youth struggle to find platforms for meaningful engagement, leaving their potential untapped in shaping policy and driving social change. This disconnect between youth and decision-makers fuels feelings of disempowerment, making it harder for young people to make a tangible difference in the issues that matter most to them.
