At the heart of the AGM we discuss strategy, where member groups reflect on the successes and challenges of the past year while charting a course for the future. With environmental issues becoming increasingly urgent, these conversations are crucial for aligning efforts and maximising impact. Friends of the Earth Europe is the largest grassroots environmental network in Europe, uniting more than 30 national organisations with thousands of local groups.

On the 25th April, the European Parliament adopted the EU’s proposal to leave the controversial Energy Charter Treaty (ECT), an international trade agreement protecting fossil fuel investments. The Energy Charter Treaty is a significant obstacle to enacting national policies to combat climate change. After years of campaigning for an exit, Friends of the Earth Europe and climate justice activists across Europe celebrate this victory for the environment and the climate. The proposal was put to plenary vote in the EU Parliament after the Belgian EU Presidency brokered a deal with the European Commission and member states on an EU withdrawal, and following its preliminary approval by the EU Council.

Our recent workshop, “The Way We Move,” held on March 27th at the FoEM Green Resource Center, sparked a lively discussion on the future of the transport system and micromobility in Malta. Micromobility includes small human or electric powered mobility devices suitable for short urban trips, such as bicycles and scooters. Increased uptake of micromobility is a key tool to reduce carbon emissions from transport. Bringing together individuals from various backgrounds, we delved into the needs, challenges, and opportunities for micromobility users in Malta. We had truly diverse perspectives represented at the workshop, from pedestrians to cyclists, wheelchair users to car owners, representatives of micromobility rental operators, activists, and simply interested citizens.
