Would you like to volunteer on a Mediterranean island, work with nature, and be part of a unique sustainability project on one of Malta’s most iconic islands?

Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is looking for a Community Garden Volunteer as part of our team. This is a European Solidarity Corp (ERASMUS+/ESC) volunteering for up to 1 year (positions of 6-12 months available), ideally starting as soon as possible. 

As a volunteer, you will be working closely with the FoEM team and will be line managed by the ESC Coordinator and Director. Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed as part of the ESC programme.

About the Role

You will be working within a small team and will support the maintenance of a community garden in an urban area. The main work will take place in our office in Floriana, but it will be expected that you regularly take part in activities in our old bakery on Comino, one of Malta’s most famous islands and a major tourist destination. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about Comino and to take part in one of the first self-sustainable projects on the island.

Duties

Due to the nature of our work, being dynamic and having a diverse set of skills is essential. Your duties will include:

  • Upkeep and technical support of the garden
  • Planning the community garden project
  • Helping in the organisation of educational activities
  • Perform activities related to our Food, Agriculture, and Biodiversity Campaign and also our Comino project
  • Creating space for community integration and involvement

Desirable Qualities & Skills:

  • Interest in gardening, agroecology, urban green spaces and heritage conservation
  • Experience in event organisation and hosting educational activities
  • Practical, hands-on attitude and comfort with outdoor work in different weather conditions
  • Basic organisational skills, such as helping plan gardening tasks, keep simple records, or prepare materials for activities
  • Flexibility and adaptability, particularly when working across different sites (Floriana and Comino)
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team, following guidance while also taking initiative when needed
  • Interest in sustainability, environmental protection and community-led projects, in line with Friends of the Earth Malta’s values

Nice to have (but not essential): 

  • Knowledge of local flora and fauna is desirable
  • Experience with DIY, restoration work, or basic maintenance (particularly relevant for the Comino bakery project)

The ideal candidate should be/have:

  • Aged 18-30 (ESC requirement)
  • A citizen of one of the partner or programme countries
  • Strong interest in environment and sustainability topics and self initiative
  • Good organisational skills
  • Affinity with the vision and values of Friends of the Earth Malta.

The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you:

  • Accommodation in a shared flat close to our offices in Floriana
  • Coverage of all living costs such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
  • Reimbursement of the flight and other transport to/from Malta, up to a limit
  • Monthly allowance
  • Private Henner insurance, if required
  • In case of disabilities, funding is available for support
