Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is looking for a Zero Waste Campaign Support Volunteer to join our team. This is a European Solidarity Corps (Erasmus+/ESC) volunteering opportunity for up to 1 year (positions of 6–12 months available), ideally starting as soon as possible.
As a volunteer, you will work closely with the FoEM team and will be line managed by the ESC Coordinator and Zero Waste Campaign Coordinator. Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed as part of the ESC programme.
About the Role
FoEM has been advocating for sustainable waste management since the 1990s. FoEM has organised a zero-waste activist camp, conducted numerous workshops on waste reduction, composting, and hosted events such as clothes swaps and repair cafes. FoEM has also participated in public consultations regarding the BCRS, the Single-Use Plastic Directive, the Long-Term Waste Management Plan 2030, and opposed the development of an incinerator. In 2024, the organisation re-launched its Zero Waste Campaign and joined Zero Waste Europe, strengthening its impact at national and European levels. FoEM’s vision is towards elimination of single-use materials, repairing of products, and efficient reusing/recycling of items to help achieve the EU goal of no more than 10% of materials being landfilled by 2035.
This role supports activities that promote waste reduction, responsible consumption, and circular economy principles. Volunteers will contribute to policy advocacy and public educational initiatives, while encouraging behavioural change and community participation..
Duties
Due to the nature of our work, being dynamic and having a diverse set of skills is essential. Your duties will include:
- Supporting the delivery of the Zero Waste Campaign Strategy and related grant projects. One current project is focused on commercial food waste reduction.
- Assisting with policy analysis, research, and advocacy on waste reduction
- Helping write public consultations, assisting with press releases, newsletters, and social media content related to the campaign
- Organising and conducting public events, workshops, and training sessions
- Preparing and distributing information materials at events and community activities
- Developing campaign-related educational resources and material
- Assisting with fundraising research and project proposal writing related to the campaign
Desirable Qualities & Skills
- Interest in zero waste, circular economy, and sustainable consumption
- Willingness to engage with communities through events and outreach
- Good organisational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Interest in environmental justice and inclusive sustainability solutions
Nice to have (but not essential)
- Experience in event organisation or community outreach
- Familiarity with waste reduction or food waste topics
The ideal candidate should be/have:
- Aged 18-30 (ESC requirement)
- A citizen of one of the partner or programme countries
- Strong interest in environment and sustainability topics and self initiative
- Good organisational skills
- Affinity with the vision and values of Friends of the Earth Malta.
The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you:
- Accommodation in a shared flat close to our offices in Floriana
- Coverage of all living costs such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
- Reimbursement of the flight and other transport to/from Malta, up to a limit
- Monthly allowance
- Private Henner insurance, if required
- In case of disabilities, funding is available for support
