Would you like to contribute to fair and sustainable food systems, protect biodiversity, and support grassroots environmental action?

Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is looking for a Food, Agriculture and Biodiversity (FAB) Campaign Support Volunteer to join our team. This is a European Solidarity Corps (Erasmus+/ESC) volunteering opportunity for up to 1 year (positions of 6–12 months available), ideally starting as soon as possible.

As a volunteer, you will be working closely with the FoEM team and will be line managed by the ESC Coordinator and FAB Campaign Coordinator. Travel and accommodation costs will be reimbursed as part of the ESC programme.

About the Role

You will be part of one of FoEM’s most comprehensive campaigns, working at the intersection of food systems, biodiversity protection, policy advocacy, and community action. The FAB campaign promotes the right to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food through a nature-based and people-centred approach.

Your work will combine research, hands-on activities, public engagement, and advocacy, allowing you to support existing initiatives and help develop new ones. This role offers a unique opportunity to understand how environmental policy, agriculture, and biodiversity protection are connected at local, national, and EU levels.

Duties 

Due to the nature of our work, being dynamic and having a diverse set of skills is essential. Your duties will include:

  • Supporting the delivery of the FAB Campaign Strategy and related projects
  • Conducting research and helping to write public consultations, and national and EU policy proposals and recommendations related to food, agriculture, and biodiversity
  • Assisting with press releases, newsletters, and social media content related to the campaign
  • Organising and conducting public events such biodiversity monitoring and citizen science activities, workshops, and training sessions
  • Planning and creating community gardens, green spaces, and pollinator-friendly spaces
  • Developing campaign-related educational resources and material
  • Assisting with fundraising research and project proposal writing related to the FAB campaign
  • Building relationships with farmer communities, stakeholders, and partner organisations

Desirable Qualities & Skills:

  • Interest in food systems, agriculture, biodiversity, or nature protection
  • Willingness to engage in both research-based and hands-on activities
  • Good organisational skills and ability to support multiple activities
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a small team
  • Interest in sustainability, environmental justice, and community-led initiatives
  • Openness to learning about policy advocacy and EU environmental processes

Nice to have (but not essential): 

  • Experience with permaculture, citizen science, or environmental research
  • Knowledge of local and EU FAB-related policies and legislation

The ideal candidate should be/have:

  • Aged 18-30 (ESC requirement)
  • A citizen of one of the partner or programme countries
  • Strong interest in environment and sustainability topics and self initiative
  • Good organisational skills
  • Affinity with the vision and values of Friends of the Earth Malta.

The European Solidarity Corps programme will provide you:

  • Accommodation in a shared flat close to our offices in Floriana
  • Coverage of all living costs such as electricity, water, gas, and internet
  • Reimbursement of the flight and other transport to/from Malta, up to a limit
  • Monthly allowance
  • Private Henner insurance, if required
  • In case of disabilities, funding is available for support
