Hedgehogs are threatened by the overuse of pesticides, which kill the species on which they can feed on, depleting their food sources, and are harmful to their systems if eaten. The use of pesticides is also a cause of habitat loss, as hedgehogs thrive in wild environments. FoEM is leading this citizen's initiative to protect all wildlife suffering and dying because of pesticides by cutting out all synthetic pesticides in the EU by 2030. TOGETHER, we have reached half of our target signatures in Malta : help us complete our target !!

Illegal Comino Roadworks – Cowboys everywhere you look…
Friends of the Earth Malta condemns the illegal roadworks at the iconic Blue Lagoon in Comino. This has become a worrying trend – from Dingli to the island of Comino and other places which have not been highlighted in the media. Contrary to the impression being given by the Ministry for Gozo who in their statement stated that there was clearance from the “relevant authorities”, Friends of the Earth Malta can confirm that the outline application for these works is still pending and that the case officer’s report recommends a refusal based on the fact that the proposal lacks the necessary information to enable complete assessment in terms of environmental and landscape requirements. Since this was an outline application, work could not have been started even in the case of approval and would have required a full development application. Can the Ministry for Gozo present us with the permit and the bank guarantee imposed?

Captain Morgan seeks to expand its takeover over Balluta Bay
After having been granted permission by the Planning Authority to operate a tourist catamaran in Balluta Bay, Captain Morgan (owned by Fortina) has now applied to occupy nearly the whole seashore on the left of the bay, effectively denying the public’s enjoyment of the sea from this part. The PA’s approval of Fortina’s catamaran in Balluta Bay was a shameful decision that is currently being appealed by several organisations and the St. Julian’s Local Council.

Flower of the month – April – Wild Orchids of the Maltese Islands
With the wide array of colours, shapes and scents of flowers bursting forth In early springtime it is very difficult to choose just one plant to focus on – so this time round we feature a selection from a group of plants known more for their exotic counterparts (grown on industrial scales to embellish homes and offices) and less for the tiny, curiously shaped orchids encountered locally in the wild.

Community Supported Agriculture Research
Community-supported agriculture is a system that connects farmer and consumers by allowing a consumer to subscribe to the harvest of a farm or group of farms. It is an alternative socio-economic model where the producer and consumer share the risks of farming. One of our members is conducting research to see if this is a viable option in Malta. If you are interested in local food production and sustainable farming, so participate in this research.
