Press Release - ENGOs - 25/08/2025 - T Friends of the Earth Malta together with Birdlife Malta and several other NGOs (listed below), have taken note of Minister Clint Camilleri’s plans to scale back the amendments to the Development Planning Act. The ENGOs wish to emphasise that every provision in the amendments to the Development Planning Act has the aim of eliminating an existing environmental protection. None of the provisions are meant to protect the environment, and no safeguards are present to restrict the use of the more expansive and ambiguous provisions. Furthermore the amendments do nothing to approve the quality of our lives, our building or natural environment.

Seasonal Recipe: Soft Peach – Peach Cake and Peach Ice Cream
Peaches (Prunus persica) were originally domesticated in China over 7,500 years ago and were introduced to Europe during or before the era of Alexander the Great. In Malta, peach cultivation has a long history, with production once widespread though in decline before recently making a modest comeback thanks to improved agricultural methods. Enhanced rootstock and irrigation have also helped extend the harvest season, from traditional July-August to now include early varieties in May and late ones through September-October.

Waves Not Walls: Ending Captivity at Mediterraneo Marine Park
A powerful movement has taken root in Malta to end the use of marine animals in the entertainment industry. At its heart stands a clear demand; an immediate end to marine mammal captivity and urging authorities to take action over conditions at Mediterraneo Marine Park. Where dolphins, sea lions and other species have been confined for years in cramped concrete tanks and forced into performances for public amusement. Guided by the values of animal liberation, ecological justice and a future free from exploitation, the campaign calls for an end to captivity-based entertainment on the island.

Reconnect with Nature
We live in a fast-paced digital world where 75% of Europeans grow up in urban areas — making us increasingly detached from nature. Together with FOE Cyprus, NOAH (Denmark) and the Center for Environment (Bosnia and Herzegovina), we are working to create opportunities for young people to rebuild that connection.

Self-care and Coping with Climate Anxiety
As the climate crisis intensifies, it is not only our environment that is under pressure, our mental wellbeing is too. Feelings of fear, helplessness, and overwhelm are increasingly common, especially among young people who are deeply concerned about their future. Terms such as eco-anxiety and climate anxiety are gaining recognition, highlighting that this emotional toll is not limited to activists on the frontlines but shared by many across society.

Nurdle Hunting on Comino at Santa Marija Bay
Every day, millions of tiny plastic pellets known as nurdles spill into the environment. These small, lentil-sized beads – typically about 2–5 millimetres in diameter and often round or oval in shape – are the raw material for most plastic products, from bottles to packaging, and they’re causing a quiet but serious environmental crisis. In Malta, as across the world, they wash up on our beaches, pollute the sea, and harm marine life.Once released into the environment, nurdles are almost impossible to clean up.
