Trees of Comino: The Mastic Tree
Known also as Lentisk (MT: Deru), the Mastic Tree’s scientific name Pistacia lentiscus may have us thinking of pistachio nuts – it is indeed a relative of the Pistachio Tree (Pistacia vera) but instead of nuts it produces tiny spherical berries in autumn. These bright red berries turn black upon ripening and are a favourite of many migrating birds which stop over for refuelling and in turn disperse the seeds.

What's the Climate COP and why do we call it to go fossil free?
COP stands for the Conference of the Parties, which is the supreme decision-making body of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). COP29 should focus on achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, reinforcing the urgency of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, ensuring global resilience, and addressing climate impacts worldwide. However, there are serious concerns around the recent COPs being hosted in petro-states, and the influence of lobbyists from the oil and gas industry increasingly influencing the global climate talks.
