Each EU member state should prepare a National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP) to outline how the country intends to meet the EU energy and climate targets for 2030. This is a key policy document for climate and energy policy in Malta. At the end of June 2024, the official deadline for the updated plan, we shared our concern about the complete lack of public participation in the process of creating the new NECP for Malta.

Friends of the Earth Malta joins Ghawdix's open letter to Clint Camilleri, Minister for Planning & Gozo. Endorsed by another 13 NGOs, the letter voiced deep concern over the sanctioning of illegal developments in Malta, even after court rulings have revoked their permits. The letter highlights a specific case (PA03869/24) where a development continued during an appeals process, only to be retroactively approved, undermining the judicial system and eroding public trust. The NGOs demand immediate reforms to halt construction during appeals and ensure court decisions are respected, urging the government to uphold the rule of law and public interest.

9 organisations strongly condemn the Government’s attempt to change the Ħal Far Local Plan so as to allow the construction of an airstrip for model aeroplanes in Wied Żnuber. The proposed changes stems from a secret agreement made in February 2022 between three government agencies and the Ħal Far Model Flying Association, which allocated public land for an airstrip for model aeroplanes. This agreement was reached without consulting the Local Council, residents, or NGOs, undermining the integrity of the entire planning process.
