FoEM’s Feedback on Malta’s Energy Shift

FoEM’s Feedback on Malta’s Energy Shift

Friends of the Earth Malta (FoEM) is thankful for the opportunity to provide feedback on the Grand Harbour Revival Plan, and are encouraged to see a number of important considerations already discussed in the plan, such as concerns around gentrification, the importance of climate resilient design, and the necessity of securing public access to the waterfront and proposed park. We believe the plan can do more to protect and bring back nature into this urban and industrial landscape, and can be an opportunity to provide safe, direct and attractive connectivity for walking, cycling and public transport through this key node in Malta’s transport network and urban area.

Watch Nature Unfold Live: A Rare Barn Swallow Nesting

Friends of the Earth Malta is excited to announce a special collaboration with BirdLife Malta, bringing nature enthusiasts, families, and curious minds closer to wildlife through a live YouTube stream of a Barn Swallow nest. The Barn Swallow is a familiar sight during migration in Malta, but it is relatively uncommon for these birds to stop and nest on the islands. This makes the current nesting event a unique opportunity to observe a remarkable chapter in the life cycle of one of Europe’s most recognisable migratory birds. Since the live stream began, viewers have already witnessed some extraordinary moments. From...

How much of your life are you wasting in traffic?

How much of your life are you wasting in traffic?

After weeks of discussions on transport proposals in the run up to the elections, the potential of cycling was hugely overlooked. Today is World Bicycle Day, a celebration of a smart, healthy and fast way of getting around. Malta could take inspiration from existing infrastructure to rethink its approach to transport. Malta’s average commute is just 6 km, which provides a lot of opportunity for cycling. For example, using an (e-)bike could halve the time wasted in traffic, taking just 20 minutes. Cities across Europe which invested in safe cycling infrastructure have seen less congestion, cleaner air, healthier communities and...

Discovering Comino’s Hidden Wildlife through Citizen Science

Discovering Comino’s Hidden Wildlife through Citizen Science

Many people visiting Comino only experience its busiest and most touristic areas, often unaware of the rich biodiversity found across the island’s fragile habitats. Yet Comino is home to a surprising variety of wildlife, from bats and hedgehogs to reptiles, pollinators, seabirds, and native plants that thrive within its unique ecosystem. Over the past months, as part of Kamp Kemmuna activities supported through the National STEM Community Fund of Xjenza Malta, Friends of the Earth Malta has been carrying out biodiversity monitoring and citizen science activities around Il-Forn ta’ Kemmuna (the Old Bakery in Comino). The aim is not only...

Goodbye to our ESC Volunteer Paola!

Goodbye to our ESC Volunteer Paola!

“I arrived in Malta in April 2025 after a few years of travelling and short-term jobs. A year has gone by and I’m still here, and happy to be so. I started my ESC knowing very little about the work of NGOs: I brought with me my experience in visual comms and a general interest in sustainability. I discovered a whole universe of new things and a field I want to continue exploring. Being part of the communications team gave me an overview of what was happening within the NGO. Gaining a view on the processes has been incredibly interesting...
