Mediterranean Youth Forum

September 1, 2021 @ 15:00 - September 3, 2021 @ 20:00 CEST

From September 1st to 3rd, from Young Friends of the Earth, together with our colleagues from Spain, Cyprus and Ireland, we organized the Mediterranean Youth Forum to share, learn and inspire ourselves, to continue walking to this new world we want to create.

We will get to know more about the topics of energy, intersectionallity, biodiversity and radical democracy in our context, and collect our visions,  which will allow us to influence the European institutions.

Details of the different events are as follows:

Why must system change be intersectional? (1 sept, 4-6pm)

The current system threatens all life on Earth, as it is built on the basis of destruction and domination rather than on regeneration. For this reason, the world we want must be built on foundations of respect and sustainability. Feminism plays a large part in this. How do we generate policies based on these factors?

Escape game (1 sept, 6-8pm)

We will rewrite the future of climate policy… if we solve the clues.

You are invited to participate in a fictitious youth summit on Climate Change in the EU. During the meeting, it dawns on everyone that the G20 countries are making fundamental decisions that will impact people in the world’s poorest countries. To solve the issue and save the day, you will work in small groups and must solve different tasks and clues linked with social-environmental injustices. Finally, you will get the opportunity to rewrite the future of climate policy so that it is shaped around what you want for the future of the Mediterranean, Europe and the world. Join us, for this fun, brain-racking and learning event.

From fossil fuels to climate refugees (2 sept, 4-6pm)

Energy policies destroy territories and their inhabitants, generate climate change and favor corporate power. What can we do?

A direct consequence of the world’s excessive use of fossil fuels is the increase in climate refugees due to the climate breakdown this has caused. However, the renewable energy production proposed by the EU is still not a sustainable option, as it is destroying natural spaces, as well as being inaccessible to thousands of people. We need a democratic-energy production revolution.

Race and global justice (2 sept, 6-8pm)

What are the impacts of European policy on the Global South?

The economic and cultural system not only damages nature, but does so unevenly in the South and the global North, causing communities and territories in the South to become increasingly vulnerable. How do we create fair policies for the South? What are the challenges to overcome? Join us while we rethink the European Green Deal from a racial justice perspective.

How to manage our natural commons (3 sept, 4-6pm)

Biodiversity is in danger… but the power of a people’s assembly will bring us the solutions!

One of the most urgent questions in the scenario of the sixth mass extinction that we live in is how we manage ecosystems, our common goods, in order to take advantage of what they provide us with while simultaneously conserving them. Given the difficulty of this, we are going to recreate a Popular Assembly to reflect on the different factors that impact this process, to try to obtain realistic solutions.

Our Green New Deal (3 sept, 6-8pm)

Current policies are not enough. What can we change in order to make them more effective?
