“I arrived in Malta in April 2025 after a few years of travelling and short-term jobs. A year has gone by and I’m still here, and happy to be so.
I started my ESC knowing very little about the work of NGOs: I brought with me my experience in visual comms and a general interest in sustainability. I discovered a whole universe of new things and a field I want to continue exploring.
Being part of the communications team gave me an overview of what was happening within the NGO. Gaining a view on the processes has been incredibly interesting and valuable.
During my volunteering year, I walked around a lot. The three islands have some beautiful landscapes that, if you do not have a car, can only be reached if you are willing to go the extra mile… which, to me, made these places even more special.
What I will treasure the most about the experience is a sense of community, in and outside of work. I’ve been surrounded by compassionate and empathetic people who care deeply about the world.
I feel grateful and lucky: with my ESC ending, I had the opportunity to stay, and I am now part of the permanent staff of FoEM as Events and Youth Organiser.”
Paola arrived in Malta in April 2025, and joined FoEM’s team for a year. Bringing a strong artistic background into the comms team, lots of laughter and positive attitude.
